Cal Silberstein is a West-Australian writer, performer, producer, and dramaturg with a specific interest in collective imagination and magical realism. He works with a diverse range of collaborators from around the world. Cal most often creates collaborative, musical works for the stage, though his portfolio spans various forms and disciplines. Writing highlights include Viva La Restoration (Midnite Youth Theatre – 2016), Fairybread (sandpaperplane – 2017), President Joan (The American Opera Project – 2019), Adam & Marie & The Impossible Photo Album (Short + Sweet 2021), Strawman (University of Miami – 2025), and The Great Emu War (Goodspeed Musicals – 2025). Performing highlights include “Scripps” in The History Boys and “Charlie Guiteau” in Assassins (Midnite Youth Theatre – 2009; 2015), “Frank Packer” in Miss Westralia (Western Sky Projects – 2021), “Edgar Allan Poe” in Nevermore (Grey Lantern – 2021), “The Steward” in Into The Woods (West Australian Opera – 2023), and his songbook series, Looking For Kafei (Most recently: State Theatre Centre of WA – 2024). Cal produces independent works through his production partnership, Ludicrous Displays. He is a proud alumnus of the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU Tisch, and is a recipient of a Tisch School of the Arts Departmental Fellowship.
